BACKGROUND:
de Luxe Standard’s Autism Awareness Keychain is more than just an accessory; it's a token of love, inspired by my son who experiences the world through the lens of ASD. I sought to redefine the classic puzzle symbol, infusing it with a touch of humanity. While preserving the iconic puzzle shape, I redesigned it to subtly resemble a person, celebrating the individual spirit of those with autism. Inside this piece lies a heart, representing not only my deep affection for my son but also solidarity with every person whose life has been touched by autism. This keychain embodies our journey, filled with unique challenges and profound joys.
The puzzle piece is the global symbol for Autism and Autism Awareness. ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disability, which is characterized by social, communication and behavioral problems. Autism is described as a spectrum due to the broad range of disorders unique to each person. Challenges may range anywhere from a lack of speech to sensory sensitivities to difficulty with social skills or behavioral problems. Although people diagnosed with ASD may share similarities, no two are alike. One of my favorite quotes is...”If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” Currently, there is no definitive reason for why or how Autism occurs. According to the CDC, 1 in 59 children are affected with ASD in the United States and ASD is four times more prevalent in males than in females.
