Autism Keychain

de Luxe Standard’s Autism Awareness Keychain was inspired by my son, who is diagnosed with ASD. I wanted to create my own interpretation of Autism’s puzzle symbol. Without straying too far from the shape of the puzzle design I created an alternative puzzle piece that resembled more of a human form.  The heart within the piece symbolizes the love for my child and for those who’s lives are, or have been impacted by someone with ASD.

The puzzle piece is the global symbol for Autism and Autism Awareness. ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disability, which is characterized by social, communication and behavioral problems.  Autism is described as a spectrum due to the broad range of disorders unique to each person. Challenges may range anywhere from a lack of speech to sensory sensitivities to difficulty with social skills or behavioral problems.  Although people diagnosed with ASD may share similarities, no two are alike.  One of my favorite quotes is...”If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” Currently, there is no definitive reason for why or how Autism occurs.  According to the CDC, 1 in 59 children are affected with ASD in the United States and ASD is four times more prevalent in males than in females.
