BACKGROUND:
For this batch, I chose raw steel for the main material. Raw steel is such a special material and is often overlooked because of its utilitarian appearance but in my eyes it’s beautiful. Especially as it ages and develops it’s rustic appearance. I’ve previously used raw steel for my Crusader Ex Machina Rosaries and was very popular. Chosen for its strength, adaptability as well as availability, steel is the foundation of many applications around the world. Buildings, bridges, transportation and tools are just a handful of examples of how this material is undeniably precious in a different way.
So why not use this amazing material as the Foundation for this batch of Rosaries, right?!
de Luxe Standard’s Decade Rosaries are built for utility, beauty & strength! We start with our custom designed cross and fleur de lis end-pieces, both of which are cut from solid 3/16” metal using a precision CNC water jet. (Quick note: the Fleur de Lis is a common symbol of The Virgin Mary) Next the pieces are given a preliminary inspection and tumbled in various media to soften the edges. Hand formed brass jump rings are attached and permanently soldered closed for strength and aesthetics. Totally unnecessary, but thats what we do! Soldering the jump rings closed also ensures the attached cord won’t accidentally slide off or needlessly fray from sharp edges. After the jump rings are in place, the steel is given a forced patina, bringing out all the amazing red, brown and orange colors. This rustic patina is unique to each piece. Additionally, each piece is lightly coated in a mueseum wax to aid in preserving the rustic patina. Over time the patina will continually change making even more special. Our hand formed bead spacers are normally made around the same time as the jump rings. Six in total for each decade rosary. Only the first three beads have these spacers, which are intended to represent the opening prayers. We make these spacers from the same metal stock used for the jump rings, which helps maintain a uniform patina throughout the rosary. Once all the hardware is completed, bead and cord selections are made. Lastly, is the painstaking task of individually tying each Rosary. Decorative king’s crown and barrel knots are used throughout the Rosary. The barrel knots are tied between each bead, to protect them from touching and possibly damaging each other. As you can see these are not your average decade Rosaries and we take extreme pride in making them.
